It was then Syl noticed the blood on the floor. It still followed Arqus.
"You're right Arqus," it said, "it's not just that though. Something is wrong with this church."
It glanced toward this cloaked figure. Its presence was faint, but detectable; its true nature was cleverly concealed. Syl's senses were quite keen. It was good at being almost like a waking radar concerning supernatural beings. For some reason, this one knew how to elude it. It waited to see if Arqus for Veronica would notice it.

Veronica rushed up to Arqus; whatever was beneath her feet would have to wait.
Approaching him, Veronica saw the blood. "Oh my God...", she muttered. "It looks fresh. What could have happened? This wasn't here when I passed a moment ago..."
Veronica looked over and noticed Syl staring into the shadows. There was something disconcerting about it. "Syl, are you alright?"

He noticed the look on Syl's face. He looked alarmed or was that excitement he sees? Arqus followed where IT was looking, but he didn't see anything.
Moving forward, joining Veronica he stated, "Something's not right."
Arqus noticed the pentagram drawn on the floor they were stepping on. The trail of blood he was following ended there.

At the mention of blood, Fiona lifted her head and moved over to the others, standing just behind them, not a part of the group, she refused to be acknowledged as one of them. She saw the blood, and then the pentagon, that couldn't be good.

Looking back at the paintings which etched out Jesus' face, Veronica turned to Arqus and replied, "There's certainly something sinister here..."

Syl took its eyes off the cloaked figure. It sensed that it was watching it intently. Who or what could it be? That question rang again and again in Syl's mind. The curiosity it felt was over-powering, but Syl managed to keep a straight face.
"I'll explain it to you later Arqus, Veronica," said Syl, "Let me take a look at what's behind the altar. Perhaps I might be able to help."
Syl ran towards Veronica and Arqus until it was next to them. It's eyes widened.
"Oh dear."
The cloaked figure stepped out of the shadows.
"Oh yes."
Syl turned to Arqus.
"I think I know what this is. It looks... awfully familiar."

"What is it?", Veronica asked quickly.

"Well..." Arqus said, impatient. "What is it?"
He was getting paranoid. He could feel the scar on his scalp burning. That couldnt be good. Fiona joined them.
"Is it human?" Arqus asked her, referring to the trail of blood on the floor.

Fiona shifted her gaze to Arqus as he spoke to her. Moving closer, she crouched down to the blood. She breathed in, taking in the scent of the blood, using her enhanced senses to shift through the different scents that surrounded her. "No. It's not human, it's not animal." She frowned, shaking her head. This wasn't a scent she was familiar with.

The cloaked figure was close enough to Syl to shiver involuntarily. Syl clenched its fists. It was an energy-based being - it didn't shiver because of temperature - it shivered because this thing's energy was so strange, so... unknown.
Syl bent down to take a good look at the pentagram, barely keeping a straight face.
"Lovely, isn't it?" asked the cloaked figure, "You may ask who I am, Sylredrae, how I am like this."
It smiled as it waved its hand in Arqus's and Veronica's face.
"I am a shadow," it said, "a manifestation of a time by gone, a time when our Lord was so much stronger. No, I do not run this place. I only watch, manipulate, help. You can see me, but they cannot. Their senses are not as keen as yours."
It patted Arqus affectionately on the head.
"This one you should watch. As well as the dark angel. It's my Lord's wish. My personal one too."
Syl paused to listen.
It then touched the pentagram delicately. Without warning, a dark, malavolant energy surged through it. It was corrupted enough to cause Syl pain. Pain! It had been a long while since Syl had last felt that.
"Aagh!"
Syl was thrown backwards. It landed on its back a few feet away, groaning. It was a good thing that it had a strong immune system to flush out the foreign energy; otherwise it would have destroyed it. Humans warded against diseases; Syl's kind had to be resistant to foreign energies. Like elemental magic to some extent; although some spells were made to be destructive to its kind.
Syl noticed that there was a tear in its skin, exposing the glowing blood vessels underneath, all of them light blue. Some of its essence leaked out, in the form of small, white lights, like sparkles in the sun. It covered its hand before Arqus or Veronica could see, although they might have seen its substitute for 'blood.'
"Ow. Now that confirms it," said Syl, nursing its finger. "And believe me. This is much more than you think."
The cloaked figure laughed, now patting Arqus's shoulder.
"Ahahahaha! I agree, Syl! I agree."

Veronica rushed to Syl and asked, "What just happened? Are you alright?"

Arqus looked sideways to where Syl was looking. There was no one beside him. Fiona was standing on his other side.
"Who is he looking at?" He wondered.

Syl covered the scratch on its finger by clenching its fist.
"Ah, Veronica, I thank for your concern," it said, "don't worry; I'll live. What happened is that some abnormal residual energy is still present, especially in this pentagram. Seems that I didn't react well to it. I have an idea what may have happened here, but I need to run a diagnosis on the pentagram. It may reveal some clues as to what happened here, although the information may be limited." Syl got to its feet and and stepped toward the pentagram.
"Thankfully," it said, smiling, "I have knowledge of the occult."
The cloaked figure still hovered around Arqus.
"Ah, you make good choices Syl. Perhaps it will help to analyze this pentagram, but if there are no result, ask me. I know plenty about the occult."
Syl ignored the cloaked figure.
"Well, if I am to do a diagnostic on the pentagram, I can't have any other energies or auras interfering. Arqus, Veronica, and... um... miss... Can you please step back from the pentagram?"

"I too have studied the occult before.", Veronica replied. "But I don't think I can provide anything for this. Do what you can, I trust you."
Veronica walked away from Syl and returned to the back of the altar. Veronica stomped; still hollow. Veronica thought it was best to see what Syl had to say about the pentagram before she checked the floor beneath."

"Ookkaaayy." Arqus said, arms crossed over his chest as he stepped out of the pentagram.
His scalp was still burning. He was curious why it was doing it. He looked at Veronica, her eyes full of concern for Syl. Then there's Fiona, who doesnt look like she cares if Syl dies or something. Two different women.
