The character Vocaloid series is a program that allows people to synthesize singing. The characters themselves aren't real singers, but they're based on real people. Gackpoid/Kamui Gakupo, for example is based on the singer Gackt.
As with real singers, some of their songs are better than others, but unlike real singers, the author of the song in question varies. I don't use the Vocaloid characters; I just listen to their music a lot. Some of their songs are pure awesome.
For more information on Vocaloids, check out their wikipedia article:

And their official website:

My favourite Vocaloids are Kaito and Kamui Gakupo/Gackpoid, so my posts will mostly be of their songs. Nonetheless, variety is good!
Here's a sample of some of the non-fan-made/gender-bent Vocaloids.
(Gender-bent vocaloids mean a character whose gender has been flipped. Ex: Kaiko is the female version of Kaito, Gakuko is the female version of Gakupo and Mikuo is is the male version of Hatsune Miku.)
Hatsune Miku
Len Kagamine
Rin Kagamine
Megurine Luka
Megurine Luka (English)
Meiko
Kaito
Kamui Gakupo (also known as Gackpoid)
And for good measure, let's include the English-speaking Vocaloids!
Yes, the English-speaking vocaloids sound more... awkward because it's harder to make them sound real due to the nature of the English language - English is a harder language to simulate than Japanese.
Here is what one commmentor said:
We've got too many different sounds in our language; it's harder for them to simulate all the possibilities and still sound natural, where as Japanese is already broken into very defined syllables. - Jarkis0Jockovis
Miriam
Leon
Sweet Ann
Prima
Big Al (one of the only songs I could find on youtube)
