Lying in bed, Veronica could barely sleep. Granted she was tired, she just didn't have the will to close her eyes. Pulling the sheets away, Veronica sunk her toes into the carpet and walked towards the ottoman where her clothes lay.
Veronica reached to the breast pocket of her jacket, pulled a cigarette from her pack of Marlboro's, stuck it between her lips and lit it.
Walking out to the balcony, she stood naked before the dark city. She knew she wasn't being watched.
Veronica closed her eyes. There had to be something to remember.
Butterflies, only butterflies.
In an open meadow, on a summer day, the butterfly flew.
It flew away.
Far from her.
Far from her reach.
Veronica jumped and reached out for it, but it flew high away from her.
That was it.
“Fucking butterflies,” Veronica muttered as she blew away a thin stream of smoke.
Veronica turned away from the balcony and burnt the cigarette out on the ashtray.
Veronica slipped her jeans back on. There was something happening somewhere and she was gonna be a part of whatever that was.
