Anya brought the drink to her lips, and let it all slide down her throat at once. She closed her eyes, feeling the burning. A smile pressed upon her lips in satisfaction. She set the glass down on the table. She enjoyed the burning sensation, it was stronger than whiskey, but she didn't mind. It cleared her mind, washed away her doubts and fears. She still didn't trust him, but she didn't feel like the walls were closing in on her, suffocating her anymore. "Mmm." She licked at her lips and moved toward the door, her movement was much like a cat, graceful and well balanced.

Veronica looked at Chains and Anya and chuckled. They look cute together.
Johnny looked over and asked, "How are you two doing over there?"

Anya glanced back to Veronica and Johnny. She smiled at him. "I'm going to take a walk, if you'd like to come with me?" she offered.

Johnny sipped his beer and replied, "Sure."

Johnny followed Anya outside.
Veronica sipped her wine, watched Johnny walk out and shrugged. What could Anya want from him?
Veronica looked Chains and smiled.

Chains realized almost too late that he had neglected to pay attention to either Johnny or Victoria as much as he should have. He forgave himself that one as it seemed that Anya would have been the easiest nut to crack, to use an old and weary analogy. But that was before she had left and left in company. Not that he minded; he was now alone with the single person that had said absolutely nothing the entire time. His interest spiked, and spiked again when he noticed her smile. “You know, curiosity almost demands that you open your mouth,” he told her grandly. “Just so I may be sure that you have a tongue. And with it, all the wonderful capacities of speech.”

"What?", Veronica asked; stunned and confused with what he just said.

“Ah, she speaks!” Chains leaned closer. “Your name is…Veronica?” he rolled the syllables around in his mouth as if tasting them. “Your friend left rather suddenly. He doesn’t worry about you being alone? Not even here, so late at night in such a disreputable corner of the city?” He tried for concern. Such a foreign emotion wasn’t easy, and he walked the verbal tightrope of sounding overly dramatic and not sounding worried enough. Things were so much easier when he could just grind them into a bloody pulp.

"I'm a big girl." Veronica replied back. "And whatever's out there, Johnny and I have been here long enough to be used to it."

He held up his slender hands with a chuckle. “No offense intended, Veronica.” In his mind he thought: Self-confident, defensive, heavily connected to Johnny some way or another. Certainly friends. Lovers? Chains forced himself to drop the smile, changed his concern into tense speculation. “I wonder if you can tell me something. How long have you and Johnny been here? And how did you arrive? I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around my own peculiar circumstances for long enough. I figured I would trade ideas with someone other than the residents. They prove to be rather, uncommunicative.” He thought back to the dull-eyed man in the alley and the disemboweling he had undertaken. He rested his hands flat on the counter to stop the growing itch in his fingers.

"I wish I could give you a straight answer," Veronica answered as she pulled the wine glass away from her. "I really do. But everything about this city just seems to be a bubbling mystery. Johnny and I got here a week and a half ago. I woke up in a motel room with Johnny... He was just there, waiting for me. He woke up beside me a couple hours before I did. We were strangers, despite our scattered memories, we both knew that. People... Beings... Seem to arrive so sporadically... Each of us with a purpose. We have business here, I'm sure of that."

“Mmm.” For what it was worth, Chains agreed with her on the apparent mystery of the city. The place was an enigma. It continually thwarted his every effort to comprehend it, but to be fair, he wasn’t trying very hard. Unlike her, he didn’t believe there was much of a purpose behind the nonsensical. He didn’t know why people inevitably wound up here, but neither did he much care. For all he knew, this could be a kind of Purgatory. Some arcane limbo between life and death. For him, it was a bump up in the world and a much needed improvement on his past circumstances. As lifeless as the inhabitants might be, and as sinister as the city seemed at times, it far trumped a noose around the neck and crows jabbing at the eyes. “And everyone you have talked to thus far tells the same story…” he mused. “Waking up in a motel room. Disoriented at first and alone. Mmm.”

The falcon hopped off his shoulder and flew around the room and skidded across the bar, stopping by a shot glass half filled with whiskey. He looked over to the two talking near by, licked at some of the drink and waddled over to them listening. "not all have waken up alone. She did say there was another with her when she got up. he was with me as well." The monk pointed at the falcon, now perched on the top of a beer mug. He pulled himself up onto a stool and looked at the others, he looked to the bartender for a moment and ordered some whiskey before he looked at the others, raised his glass to them and downed the drink.

Chains entertained the notion of doing to the falcon what he had done to the crows before it. Impudent creature. And such a light skeleton under all those feathers. It didn’t take much force at all to snap a bird’s neck, just a sharp twist and that was that. Motion caught his senses before the voice did and he looked back over a shoulder in time to see the man lower himself into an adjacent stool. “Another city wanderer?” he asked. “Subliminal. It seems we lost souls are gathering en masse tonight.”
