The Streets
Johnny really didn't know what he was doing, but he figured, she was all he had.
Johnny kept his hands around the back of his head as he and Veronica wondered through the streets. Neither one of them said a word to each other since they left the motel. Johnny wondered if it was either on account that neither knew the other or if they were both trying to get a grip on what was going on.
It could have been both.
The streets were empty, much to Johnny's sarcastic surprise.
They past by an old parked Lincon Continental. Johnny stared at it as he passed it by. He closed his eyes as the familiar sound of a country song resounded in his head.
“Where I was before and where I was last night... Always things.”
Johnny stopped where he was. Suddenly before him, inside his mind, he saw the darkness over night and a stretch of road that just came closer and closer. That country song playing closer and closer.... That car... He was inside that car.
Johnny turned around and motioned towards the car.
“Hey,” Veronica said.
Johnny didn't mind her.
Standing before the door, Johnny fished deep into his pockets. The keys, they have to be there somewhere. Johnny came empty and found nothing.
“What's the matter?” Veronica asked.
“This car...” Johnny replied. “Strange, I had something just like it.”
Veronica knelled before the front of the car.
“It's got an Arizona license plate.”, Veronica said rising. “Are you from there?”
Johnny looked back at her and said, “I don't know.”
Johnny walked away from the car and motioned past her, saying, “Whatever it is, I guess its not gonna do us any help right now.”
“You never seem to know...”
Johnny stopped where he was a found her beside the car.
“What did you say?”
“I said, you never seem to know!”, she darted back. “Couldn't you give yourself just a minute to think?”
Johnny stopped where he was and said, “Ok.”
Closing his eyes, he humed what he knew of that old country song. Why not? It could actually work.... In the darkness that surrounded him, he saw a man in tears; his home burning behind him. The man was in such agony as he slowly approached Johnny.
Fuck, damn it!
Johnny opened his eyes and motioned a gun with his fingers and pretended to fire away.
He screamed aloud as a sharp pain hit him in the head, and with it caused an emotion so painful, it was like he was burning at the bottom of the world. Johnny dropped to his knees, as he one hand tightly clutched his heart- the other clutching his chest.
Veronica ran to him. Kneeling before him, she placed her arm over his shoulders.
“Are you alright?”
“I'm not sure...”
Johnny rose and Veronica held his hand in support. Slowly, they began walking again.
“What was that?”
“I don't know.”
“Whatever it was you don't have to tell me.”
“Good, because I don't know what it was...”
Veronica chuckled and Johnny laughed.
They approached the church and found a black feather outside.
Johnny bent to pick it up, but as soon as he laid his finger on it, the feather disintegrated into ashes.
“You wanna go inside?” Veronica asked.
“Sure...”
